CHANMIN KIM is based in Seoul, South Korea and Cologne, Germany.

He is an experimental filmmaker and folk singer-songwriter.

 

Chanmin Kim’s work revolves around an in-depth exploration of personal experiences and the fictional events or fragmented memories derived from them. His art is primarily expressed through video(and often sound performances), creating dynamic images that emphasize the uniqueness of each visual, or improvisational and nonlinear images reflecting the inner world of the self. Rather than relying on predetermined plans or structured frameworks, his approach unfolds in an impulsive and irregular manner, guided by momentary sensations through a self-reflective and repetitive process. This method reveals that his work itself is a process of self-examination and introspection, highlighting his pursuit of existential inquiry through personal experience. In this sense, his practice offers a new interpretation of existentialism, extending beyond traditional existentialist philosophy to a more personal and experiential dimension.

 

His works are often confessional, at times uncomfortable and even unpolished, forming a distinct artistic language that values raw and honest expression. Recently, Chanmin Kim has been focusing on analog film as his primary medium, particularly researching film development techniques and exploring new visual phenomena arising from this process.
